When you are coming from Sacramento to Amador through Jackson Road, the first place you are going to see to your left in the intersection before you enter Shenandoah Road is Prospect Cellars. Their tasting room is the restored original Post Office building on Main Street Plymouth, California, and it is the perfect place for a first stop when visiting this wine region.
Founded by Ronn and Jamie Lubenko with the goal of honoring their ancestors, who have been heavily involved in the development of Amador. I was lucky enough to learn about their story by Jamie herself, her passion and love for their legacy are really touching, she is really a great host. Their family history goes back to 1863 when her husband’s great grandparents arrived at what we know today as the Shenandoah Valley, four years later after the great grandfather passed away, the great grandmother planted her first Zinfandel vine, and ever since the family has been grape growers for about six generations. Even though the original vineyard is no longer in the family, Ronn and Jamie decided to stay in the wine business and opened the first “legitimate” winery of the family, producing amazing wines with locally sourced grapes.
At their tasting room, they offer delicious food that pairs with their wines, they also serve a sangria that is perfect for a sunny summer day, and their tasting selection is just simply delicious. Here are my notes from the tasting I did during my visit:
2019 High Stakes, Chardonnay: This buttery but also crisp Chardonnay has notes of apple and pear in the nose and a smokey apple flavor on the palate.
2017 Gold Digger, Red Blend: This blend of Barbera, Sangiovese, Petite Sirah, and Zinfandel is bold and full-body. It has notes of berries, allspice, and jam in the nose. On the palate has notes of cherry and dark fruits. I think it needs to be decanted or open for a while before drinking it, in order to get its full potential, but it is very well balanced and with a nice lingering finish.
2017 Boom Town, Zinfandel: This is a complex Zin, in my opinion, very different from others. It is jammy, with hints of blackberry, cherry, and allspice. This wine comes from a 50 years old vineyard.
2017 Legacy, Zinfandel: This is an outstanding wine! I love Zins and I think this could be easily one of my favorites. This wine comes from the Original Upton Vineyard in Amador, which is a 150 years old vineyard. This is a full-body, well-balanced wine with notes of blackberry, cherry, plum, and a hint of vanilla.
2017 Pick and Shovel, Petite Sirah: This is a really delicious Sirah. Full body, tannic and, bold wine with a smooth finish. This wine has notes of plum, blackberry, black pepper, and a hint of dark chocolate in the after taste.
Overall, I was really impressed by the quality of their wines. Their place is really cozy and charming, and their service is outstanding. They really make you feel at home.

Visita a Prospect Cellars
Cuando vengas de Sacramento a Amador a través de Jackson Road, el primer lugar que verás a tu izquierda en la intersección antes de ingresar a Shenandoah Road es Prospect Cellars. Su sala de degustación es el edificio original restaurado de la oficina de correos en Main Street Plymouth, California, y es el lugar perfecto para una primera parada cuando visites esta región vinícola.
Fundada por Ronn y Jamie Lubenko con el objetivo de honrar a sus antepasados, quienes han estado muy involucrados en el desarrollo de Amador. Tuve la suerte de conocer su historia por la propia Jamie, su pasión y amor por su legado son realmente conmovedores, es realmente una gran anfitriona. 2019 High Stakes, Chardonnay: Este Chardonnay cremoso, pero también fresco tiene notas de manzana y pera en la nariz, y un sabor a manzana ahumada en el paladar.
2017 Gold Digger, Red Blend: esta mezcla de Barbera, Sangiovese, Petite Sirah y Zinfandel es audaz y de cuerpo robusto. Tiene notas de frutos del bosque, pimienta de Jamaica y mermelada en la nariz. En la boca tiene notas de cereza y frutos negros. Creo que hay que decantarlo o abrirlo un rato antes de beberlo para sacar todo su potencial, pero está muy bien equilibrado y con un final agradable.
2017 Boom Town, Zinfandel: Este es un Zin complejo, en mi opinión, muy diferente de los demás. Es dulce, con toques de mora, cereza y pimienta de Jamaica. Este vino procede de un viñedo de 50 años.
2017 Legacy, Zinfandel: ¡Este es un vino excepcional! Amo los Zins y creo que este podría ser fácilmente uno de mis favoritos. Este vino proviene del Viñedo Original Upton en Amador, que es un viñedo de m{as de 150 años. Es un vino de cuerpo robusto, bien equilibrado, con notas de mora, cereza, ciruela y un toque de vainilla.
2017 Pick and Shovel, Petite Sirah: Este es un Sirah realmente delicioso. Vino de cuerpo completo, tánico y atrevido con un final suave. Este vino tiene notas de ciruela, mora, pimienta negra y un toque de chocolate negro en el regusto.
En general, me impresionó mucho la calidad de sus vinos. Su lugar es realmente acogedor y encantador, y su servicio es excelente. Realmente te hacen sentir como en casa.
